Clothes
You will want to be thoughtful about what clothes you pack. Mazama is a casual place where technical clothing and flip flops are the norm. The high altitude creates large daily temperature variations, so plan to pack a variety of clothing options.
Summers are characterized by long dry periods, hot days and cool nights. A 90 degree day might see a 40 degree temperature swing at night. A warm sweatshirt or puffy jacket will be welcomed on cool nights.
Must haves:
Swimming suits & shorts
Sandals
Warm sweatshirt
Puffy jacket
Winters are especially humid producing dry snow. Snow gear will be required for most outings. Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit to enjoy the outdoor spa!
You will have access to a high-volume washing machine and dryer.
Gear
With so many things to do it can be difficult to consider what to bring and what to leave home. At a minimum pack a pair of hiking shoes/boots, a jacket, water bottle, daypack, sunglasses and sunscreen.
Après Cabin’s Gear Garage is fully furnished with gear for the whole family.
Methow Valley Cycle and Sport sells and rents bikes, stand up paddle boards, float tubes and skis. If you are a serious cyclist you might want to pack your helmet, shoes and pedals and saddle.
Goat’s Beard can assist you with skis, climbing gear, technical clothing and guides.
Whoopsies!
Forget something at home? We keep extra provisions on hand for those little things we all seem to forget from time to time.
Travel
Drive
The drive to Après Cabin is beautiful year-round. If you are coming from the West side of the North Cascades, confirm Highway 20 is open before departure, as the pass is typically closed from mid-November until May.
All wheel drive vehicles with proper snow tires are strongly suggesting during winter months, where 2-4 foot snowfalls are common in a 24 hour period. The area sees 10-15 feet of snow each season.
The closer you get to the cabin, the more wildlife you might encounter on the road, especially at dawn and dusk. Here are some tips for driving in the wilderness.
